I met Karolina while working as a mediator in a support group in the village of Hontianske Nemce.
In our first meeting she gave an impression of a timid, worried person refusing to talk about herself and her family. With the growing frequency of the meetings and my support Karolina slowly began taking part in the discussions and opening herself up.
Her life was not easy. Her husband liked a drink, liked to control her and make her do his tasks around the home. He never had any nice words to her or their children. He showed no interest in raising the children.
Since involvement and cooperation of fathers is among the project’s goals, we invited Karolina’s husband to join the group. He refused to take part in the activities and only listened to what the other parents had to say.
His wife Karolina showed the initiative when she spoke about how she learned to recognise symptoms of illnesses in children, how she prepared simple and healthy meals for them.
With the help of the project, the timid Karolina changed into an independent and self-confident woman and gradually changed her own, as well as her husband’s relationship to the children and to parental duties.
One of my last visits to this family allowed me the joy of seeing the results of our efforts. Karolina’s husband was playing a little nursery rhyme game with his son. I will always remember the look on Karolina’s face, her eyes smiling, radiating peace and inner strength. This project helped her learn to find joy in her life and her children
Support us so we can keep helping mothers like Karolina!
